Finally

Atlanta's long drought is over. No, I'm not talking about the fact that we are about to run out of water. We finally have our own WNBA franchise. (Aside to Crystal: Who said there weren't good places in Atlanta to meet women).

There are a few questions that I asked myself when I found this out:

1. Do they expect a city that has the lowest attendance for NBA games to support a WNBA franchise?

2. Will they outdraw the Hawks?

3. What will the mascot be? As of this posting they don't have one yet. Might I suggest the Ladyhawkes

my response when i heard this on NPR tuesday...

"humm? i didn't realize the WNBA still existed. and i certainly didn't know they were expanding."

this makes no sense. it's like atlanta opening a waterpark right now. i give the WNBA until 2010 before it starts contracting expansion cities like Atlanta, Chicago, and Charlotte (wait, are they even still in Charlotte??).

and as for meeting women, obviously you have never been to a WNBA game. As a season ticket holder of courtside seats for the now defunt Orlando Miracle (franchise moved to Connecticut) I can attest to the mullet-heavy attendance pool of lesbians at these events. Sure, there are a disproportionate amount of lesbians who attend women's sporting events, but, frankly, they are dykes and I am not a fan...

If they go with "Ladyhawkes" I hope they play that awesome synth soundtrack when the team takes the court.

and btw, they never "lady"-ize anything in the WNBA. in cities with accompanying men's teams, sometimes they mimic but never closely. more often than not the name has something to do with the city.

case in point. cleveland. the cleveland rockers have nothing to do with the cavs but alot to do with the rock n roll hall of fame. seattle. nothing to do with the sonics. but seattle storm is a great name. i do like the juxtaposition between the sacramento kings and the monarchs (cute) and the minnesota timberwolves and the lynx. but my favoite is phoenix. if you were the suns what would you name your WNBA team? that's right...the mercury!

as for georgia, though i would be fine with the ladyhawkes (i mean, i love michelle pfeiffer as much as the next lesbian), i am thinking it will be something like the atlanta kestrels or the georgia merlins. or maybe the georgia sea eagles. all in the raptor family. which includes the hawks and falcons.
